The Quiet Grief No One Talks About

People talk about grief after someone is gone.
They don’t talk much about the grief that comes while someone is still here.
When my husband started forgetting things, I told myself it was normal. Then he forgot my birthday. Then our anniversary. Then, one day, he asked me how long we’d been married.
I smiled and answered. Then I went into the bathroom and cried so quietly I scared myself.
Caregiving taught me that loss doesn’t always arrive all at once. Sometimes it shows up slowly in pieces.
I grieved the conversations we used to have. The decisions we used to make together. The version of him that still lives in my memories.
But I stayed. Because love doesn’t leave just because things change.
Some days are heavy. Some days feel lonely even when I’m not alone. But I remind myself that showing up still matters even when it hurts.
