New Hope resident Bradley Cooper shared his experience as a caregiver in a new documentary that recently hit streaming on PBS, writes Molly McVety for PhillyVoice.
The famed actor served as executive producer for the documentary, titled “Caregiving.” In the film, Cooper and others share their experience acting as the primary support for terminally ill family members.
“Like most people, I didn’t even think about caregiving until my father was diagnosed with cancer,” said Cooper in the documentary.
Cooper stepped back from acting in 2010 to care for his father and savor their remaining time together.
The actor discussed his dynamic with his father and the impact that his father’s sickness had on their relationship. Cooper’s father sadly passed away in 2011.
Caregivers are the unsung heroes of the world, facing pressures, financial constraints and emotional strain.
Studies from 2023 found that, in the United States, 5 million paid caregivers earn an average of around $23,700 annually. Meanwhile, 105 million adults act as unpaid caregivers for loved ones.
“The caregiving experience I had with my father inspired this documentary,” Cooper said. “It is my hope that ‘Caregiving’ will provide affirmation and support for those who do this profoundly meaningful and increasingly vital work.”
