The Caregiver Who Changed Lives: Honoring Ms. Funmi

In all my years in the caregiving industry, I have never met anyone quite like Ms. Funmi.
Caregiving is a profession that demands patience, compassion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to others. While I have had the privilege of working alongside many outstanding caregivers, Ms. Funmi stands in a class of her own. She is not just a caregiver; she is a force of kindness, a source of comfort, and, to many of our clients, an angel in human form.
Whenever there is an urgent staffing need, Ms. Funmi is often the first person willing to step in. Whether the assignment is across town, at short notice, or with a client known to be particularly challenging, she accepts it with grace and professionalism. Time and time again, she accomplishes every task seamlessly, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she serves.
What amazes me most is her ability to connect with the most difficult-to-please clients.
Anyone who has worked in home care knows the type. These are clients who seem perpetually dissatisfied, who have gone through multiple caregivers, and who often carry frustration, anger, or disappointment from the many challenges life has placed before them.
Yet somehow, when Ms. Funmi walks through their door, something changes.
Her calming presence has a remarkable effect on people.
Even during the most difficult encounters, she remains composed, respectful, and compassionate. She never allows harsh words or difficult behaviors to affect the quality of care she provides. Instead, she responds with empathy and kindness. More often than not, clients who initially resist care eventually find themselves returning that same kindness to her.
Despite maintaining a permanent client assignment, Ms. Funmi is always willing to help when another caregiver calls out. She frequently covers respite care cases during her spare time, and the results are always the same: clients ask for her by name.
One family, whose loved one receives weekend respite services, refuses to accept any substitute caregiver when Ms. Funmi is unavailable. The client's son often jokes with our office staff, saying, "Why can't your boss clone Ms. Funmi? We need more caregivers like her."
His words always make us laugh, but there is truth behind the humor.
People remember how Ms. Funmi makes them feel.
Curious about her extraordinary success, I once asked her what her secret was.
Her answer left me speechless.
"I treat every client with kindness and empathy," she said. "The moment I step into their home, I remind myself that they need help. That's why I was called. I also understand how frustrating and overwhelming their health situations can be. Many people come into their lives focused on completing tasks, but not everyone takes the time to make them feel seen, heard, and valued."
Those words perfectly capture who Ms. Funmi is.
One particular case demonstrates this better than any other.
Several years ago, a young paraplegic woman with developmental challenges and a history of aggressive behavior required care. The case was considered one of the most difficult assignments in our agency. Many caregivers declined the shift, and even some family members struggled to manage her care.
When the opportunity arose, Ms. Funmi agreed to take the assignment.
From that day forward, everything changed.
During her first visit, she noticed something heartbreaking. The young woman was receiving sponge baths only a few times a week, often using the same worn-out towel repeatedly. When Ms. Funmi asked about her favorite shampoo, body wash, or personal care products, there were none.
So she decided to do something extraordinary.
Out of her own kindness, she purchased rose-scented shampoo, body cream, fresh towels, and new personal care supplies in the young woman's favorite colors.
She also noticed something else.
The young woman loved music.
Like any other young woman her age, she enjoyed listening to her favorite songs and expressing herself. Ms. Funmi bought her an earpiece so she could enjoy music on her phone and began helping her dress beautifully each day.
She treated her like the princess she deserved to feel like.
At first, the young woman's mother questioned why special-occasion outfits were being worn on ordinary days. Ms. Funmi gently explained that clothes sitting untouched in a closet served no purpose. Every young woman deserves to feel beautiful, regardless of her physical limitations.
That simple shift in perspective changed everything.
The compliments began pouring in from family members, therapists, visitors, and staff at her day program. For perhaps the first time in a long time, the young woman felt noticed, appreciated, and celebrated.
As she felt more loved and valued, her behavior improved dramatically.
The household became calmer. Family relationships improved. Her caregivers experienced fewer challenges. Most importantly, the family learned how to better understand her emotional needs and provide the love and attention she had been missing.
The transformation was remarkable.
What started as routine caregiving became a lesson in dignity, compassion, and the power of human connection.
That is the gift Ms. Funmi brings to every client she serves.
She is a mother, a grandmother, a mentor, a caregiver, and an extraordinary human being. She reminds us that caregiving is about much more than assisting with daily tasks. It is about restoring dignity, creating joy, building trust, and helping people feel seen and valued.
We are incredibly grateful to have Ms. Funmi as part of our team. We speak proudly of her accomplishments to clients, colleagues, friends, and families because her work deserves to be celebrated.
In fact, we have run out of awards to give her.
That is why I wanted to honor her in this way.
Ms. Funmi, if you are reading this, please know that your kindness has touched countless lives. The compassion you show every day inspires everyone around you and reminds us of the true meaning of caregiving.
Thank you for your dedication. Thank you for your heart. Thank you for the lives you have changed.
May God bless you tremendously for all that you do.
